White Rim from Moab Via Potash Road 2017 Prep work

Well, it was time to get off the couch from a long Ski season and head out on an epic adventure.  I have always wanted to ride the White Rim in Moab from town--not in a day (which would be crazy for me at least?) but as an overnight.  After mapping the route out on RideWithGPS, the halfway mark was about the Candlestick campground on the White Rim Proper.  Looking at the NPS site reservation system for I was in luck for a Sunday night stay over at Candlestick and so the trip came together super fast.  A few offers were put out for a partner but so last minute, no one was able to put it together.  So, solo I was and a huge ride in a big vast amazing National Park was looming ahead--now we were talking!

Now taking a trip like this takes a lot of support too from friends and family and I cannot thank them enough.  From the home life with little ones, dogs to feed and horse camp to be at, when one person is away, all of this is on someone else's shoulders.  And then I have friends and family who watch the Spot tracker also to make sure I am doing okay and there to help me if I need it.  Again, thank you for the support before, now, and in the future. I owe all of you for sure...not just a beer, way more than that.  And then there are the countless hours of planning any adventure from a 4 week mountaineering trip of Aconcagua to a two day bike packing trip in Moab of the White Rim.

I wrote this up for the many of you that are not out there with me or friends doing these adventures and hope it allows you to be a part of it, fell a part of it and enjoy some of the same magnificent places I have seen in my many years in life. Most of this info for you all will be normal going a trip stuff and way more detail than you want to read but for others this will show one how it all works behind the scenes.  I hope you enjoy either way.

Packing at home, gear lists, and more lists...ended up with just taking a ground sheet and tarp on this trip.  The newly finished basement offered a great place to spread out and figure it all out.  Food was easy and with warmer temps, not many clothes were needed.  I will break down the gear below in more detail.

 Overall gear pile...

This was my triangle frame bag.  Here I have pump, tent stakes, small towel, ESBIT stove and tablets, pot, lighter, tube wrapped in saran wrap, head lamp, ear plugs, spork, tent pole, bike tool, C02, permit and parks pass, and spare wool socks.
In my saddle bag I carried MSR Lite Dromedary Bag 4L, wind stopper gloves, thermal knee warmers, tube, spare batteries (AA, AAA), 4 shopping bags for sand stakes, two 1L filled water bottles for water stash, and all the food you see.
In my handlebar bag I have North Face Blue Kazoo sleeping bag, Thermorest NeoAir Womens Sleep Pad, Compression Sack, bug head net, ear plugs, Sil Nylon Tarp, cord for tarp, Montbell Rain coat, Ascent Down Sweater.
IN my Dueter back pack I carried Medium Zip Lock of Cashews, Etrex Garmin GPS/Case, Sun glass bag, 3L camel back bag, blinky light, zip ties, rag, bandanna, wind vest, sun hat, emergency blanket/ground cloth, shock pump, and first aid kit (band aids, wrap, gauze roll, safety pin, leatherman scissor tool, wet wipes, toilet paper, rubber glove, IB, Tylenol, sun screen, chain lube, 2ft of bailing wire, tire patches, chain piece, chain links, rear spare der hanger, spare pivot bolt for maverick, spare Tubeless valve for rims, compass, lighter, spare brake pads, clear lenses for sunglasses and tire patch plastic bottle pieces.

In my top tube bag I carried Spot tracker, Salt tabs in red case, chap stick, 3 GU's, skratch drink mix, chamois creme packets, cliff bar, Honey stinger waffle.
On my person I had helmet, sunglasses, gloves, sun sleeves, sun legs, bibs, jersey top, wool socks, specialized MTB shoes and large water bottle (on bike frame) with drink mix in it.

This gear all adds up and especially with water weight.  At one point I was carrying 7.5 Liters of water for the end of the first day which alone adds up to 18lbs.  My bike weights 26.5lbs with nothing else on it.  So, at 44.5 lbs and none of the gear/food above, well you get the idea of what I was going to be schlepping along the trip!  Legs, hear me now and be ready!!  Off we go...
